Multiplayer heist sim PAYDAY 3's launch has been anything but smooth, with massive numbers of players unable to access the game. Plagued by server and matchmaking issues, the always online nature of the title is exacerbating the situation still further.
Problems began for PS5 players when the title's "early access" period started on the 18th. Players who'd paid extra for the privilege were told they were playing the wrong build (and that it was Sony's fault), with the correct version being rolled out the next day.
But issues persisted right up until the full release of the game, on the 21st, where things got so bad it warranted an apology from Starbreeze Studios CEO Tobias Sjögren, who tweeted: "We are so sorry that the infrastructure didn’t hold up as expected, and although it’s impossible to prepare for every scenario – we should be able to do better. We work tirelessly until we have restored all services and our players can get back to heisting again without issues!"
The weekend saw little relief, and players on all platforms reported connectivity issues. This brings us to today, Monday the 25th, and the PAYDAY 3 account itself gives us a pretty good indication of how things are going. At the time of this writing, servers are currently down.
The always-online nature of PAYDAY 3 only makes matters worse, as players can't even run through missions with AI-controlled companions offline in the meantime, as was the case with PAYDAY 2.

Yeah I was exicited to jump in a couple days ago and yet my buddy and I couldn't even get a match. From what I've read PayDay2 was pretty poor on release compared to a few years later, so I wouldn't be surprised if this game is fantastic in 3 years.
What an absolutely abysmal launch. I played the game on Gamepass and still feel robbed, I was able to play 4 matches before the servers crapped out again. Why Starbreeze decided to do always online is beyond me, what a boneheaded decision... These are the kinds of mistakes that can bankrupt a company, and this company seems like it's unable to learn from the last time it went bankrupt.
Absolutely and utterly unacceptable.
This is just indicative of where we are in the world at large. I believe Hudson mentioned something about an express elevator…
I am probably never gonna play this game since apparently you're forced to do challenges, if you don't, no xp at all. So unless they change that and fix the servers, no buy from me ever.
Modern Gaming.
Release First
Fix Later
Day 1 purchasers are glorified beta testers these days
Terrible implementation of a live service.
Why always online when in single (human) player mode?
Bonkers. No benefit at all to the playing customer (dont tell me the Cloud makes all the magic happen, yeh right).
The only benefit is for the publisher, so that they can harvest your personal data and make more revenue through selling it on.
Their greed gives them what they deserve.
dont buy a game day 1 you pay more for a worse experience
if people havnt learned that by now where you been for the last few years
Cyberpunk 2077 proved that gamers have short memories. They'll shout about boycotts and betrayal, but in the end, if it ends up being patched into a good game, it's all forgotten about.
Developers know this. Which is why they keep on doing it. Gamers need to have more self-awareness as to what caused this situation in the first place.
@LifeGirl that's not necessarily true. A couple of negative experiences and most people learn their lesson.
Cyberpunk is the poster boy for not preordering. And unlike cyberpunk some games never improve, in some instances, getting worse.
Launch has been horrible. You can't do limited beta and stress test for online games. That's dumb.

Ah, the joys of mandatory online, eh? Imagine paying extra to be a beta tester.
@LifeGirl Fantastic example. Taught me never to buy a game from CD Projekt.
@LifeGirl exactly
Nope, no one saw this coming at all.. months ago the game looked like Gen 2 garbage now that it’s out it just goes to show how horrible this game really is
Yeah, Sony, live-service games are definitely the way forward...
Lol. What apology? He didn't apologize once. Not a single time.
He's blaming everything around him instead. Pathetic company.
I hope they make it playable by the time I finish Lies of P. But I have to say I had no high hopes after I had seen first alpha or beta gameplay footage.
@Nepp67 you do get xl for completing and failing heists, challenges just make it faster
